Home Insulation Frequently Asked Questions
What is insulation?
Insulation is a material added to houses that provides resistance to heat flow through the building’s envelope. In the winter it slows heat loss from the home, and in the summer it reduces heat gain.
What are the benefits of insulation?
Insulation is a material added to houses that provides resistance to heat flow through the building’s envelope. In the winter it slows heat loss from the home, and in the summer it reduces heat gain.
Where is insulation added?
In addition to exterior walls and attics, insulation should be installed in ceilings with unheated spaces, basement walls, floors above vented crawl spaces, cathedral ceilings, floors over unheated garages or porches, and possibly interior walls. The goal is to create a consistent wrap around the home, or a “thermal envelope,” with no penetrations.
What is the proper amount of insulation needed for a home?
The code minimum for attics in new buildings is R-49, but it’s beneficial to go above this. We recommend R-60 for added energy efficiency. R-13 is the minimum recommended for walls, and R-25 is minimum for floors and crawl spaces.
What is R-value?
R-value is the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.
What types of insulation do you install?
We install loose-fill fiberglass, closed cell spray foam and blown-in cellulose insulation.
How can I save money on insulation?
Many energy companies offer rebates for adding insulation to your home by a preferred contractor. We are a preferred contractor for CenterPoint Energy, Xcel Energy and Minnesota Energy Resources.
Can I install it myself?
Some insulation can be installed by homeowners, but other types require professional expertise and tools, such as spray foam insulation.
How do I know if my home is adequately insulated?
Our team can perform a home energy audit to find air leaks in your home. We can also use infrared diagnostics to see where current insulation is not performing as it should.
Can additional insulation be added to an existing home?
Yes, extra insulation can be added to existing homes! We can even add insulation to walls by drilling holes between studs to add loose-fill insulation.
